An assurance engagement (audit) is an examination of accounting procedures and records with the intent of verification. An audit provides the highest level of assurance and allows accountants to express an opinion on the fairness of the financial statements.
A review engagement is an examination of accounting procedures and records to provide a moderate level of assurance. A review engagement consists of significant analysis but less extensive work than an audit.
A compilation engagement (Notice to Reader) is an examination of accounting procedures and records to collect, classify and summarize financial information.
